This odd-named but common lily is also known as a “Ball-head Cluster Lily” and is sometimes called a Brodiaea.  One could easily confuse it with a “Blue Dick”  (we did), but it blooms later.   The strange name is somewhat mysterious.  Most sources assume it to be Native American in origin, but no one seems sure of this.   Common to western Oregon, southwestern Washington and northern California; it shows up in parts of the Southwest as well.  We saw oodles of these on the Starvation Ridge trail recently.
