Unlike the phlox we commonly see carpeting gravelly windswept mountain passes, the p. speciosa variety is a taller plant found in open woods and meadows at low elevation , often mixed with other grassland flowers. While the color varies from very light to dark pink and center markings differ, you can tell this species by the notched, heart-shaped petals.  The Showy Phlox in fact doesn’t grow in the Cascades and Olympics, rather on the sagebrush steppe, east of the Cascades and Siskiyou Mountains and further south.
