This small and rather plain member of the rose family, also known as “Pink Pinwheels”, was prevalent in a small, sunny meadow near the trailhead on a recent hike on the east side of Mt. Hood.

That meadow was very near a larger meadow named “Horkelia Meadow”, which was profiled on the Mount Hood National Park Campaign site a few years back.  The genus is named after Johann Horkel (1769-1846), a German botanist.
